GADSDEN, Ala. — A former treasurer for the Etowah County Rescue Squad has been arrested on charges of theft and fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, according to the Gadsden Police Department.
Maryann Stanfield was taken into custody after authorities say she used the Rescue Squad’s debit card to pay for personal expenses over the course of several years.
The alleged misuse was discovered after the organization’s bank flagged suspicious transactions, which were then reported to other squad members. An internal review led to the filing of formal charges.
Stanfield faces:
Theft of Property in the 1st Degree
Fraudulent Use of a Credit/Debit Card
Authorities say Stanfield has cooperated with the investigation and voluntarily surrendered after the charges were filed. The total amount allegedly misused has not been disclosed but is said to involve several thousand dollars.
The investigation remains ongoing.
