NEW BERN, N.C. — District Attorney Scott Thomas announced that Marvin Ramone Berry Jr., 22, of New Bern, has been sentenced to an active prison term of 70 to 96 months in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction following a guilty plea to Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
The charges stem from a June 2024 incident in which Berry followed an unsuspecting victim near the 700 block of Pollock Street in downtown New Bern around 9 p.m. After the victim stopped briefly, Berry pulled a revolver, demanded their purse, and fled the scene.
Thanks to a detailed description provided by the victim—including Berry’s appearance, attire, and the bookbag he was carrying—New Bern Police quickly identified and located Berry walking on Bloomfield Street, not far from the scene.
Upon searching his bag, officers recovered a .38 revolver, the victim’s purse, cellphone, password information, and other personal items.
Berry, a convicted felon, had prior convictions for Common Law Robbery, Larceny of a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Matthew T. Wareham, investigated by the New Bern Police Department, and presided over by Superior Court Judge R. Kent Harrell.
