SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – A Spartanburg County woman, Marshona Brown, has been charged with insurance fraud and two counts of forgery after allegedly submitting altered medical bills totaling over $27,000.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced the charges Monday, stating that the 35-year-old submitted falsified claims to Progressive Direct Insurance Company on September 27 and October 3, 2024.

According to arrest warrants, Brown altered medical documents to increase the amounts billed, then filed false insurance claims totaling $27,523.18. Investigators determined the documents had been intentionally modified to deceive the insurer and obtain higher payouts.

Brown was arrested and booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center. She faces:

Two counts of forgery, value over $10,000

One count of presenting a false insurance claim, value over $10,000

The case is being prosecuted by the South Carolina Department of Insurance.
