by Sophia Bennett

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — On July 15, 2025, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported assault in the 42000 block of Mechanicsville Road at approximately 5:50 p.m.

Upon arrival, deputies located and identified Mark Anthony Cranston Jr., 38, in the yard of the incident location and took him into custody without incident.

Two adult victims, who had fled to a neighboring house, were found with severe injuries. The female victim suffered a single neck wound consistent with a stabbing, while the male victim had seven to eight stab wounds on his neck, left arm, and right shoulder, along with a neck laceration and facial contusion. A knife with a roughly ten-inch blade was recovered from the scene.

Both victims were airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation to nearby hospitals and remain in stable condition.

Preliminary investigations indicate the assault stemmed from a domestic-related dispute between Cranston and the victims.

Cranston was charged with two counts each of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. He had previously been released on his own recognizance on June 3, 2025, while awaiting trial on separate assault charges in another jurisdiction.
