TORONTO — Police have arrested Maria Corpuz, 43, in connection with a two-year fraudulent immigration scheme operating in the Yonge and Eglinton area.

From May 2023 to May 2025, Corpuz allegedly offered immigration services promising Canadian citizenship and work permits, collecting fees from multiple victims. Authorities say she provided official-looking documents that were later determined to be forged and fraudulent.

Corpuz was taken into custody on July 8 and charged with three counts of fraud under $5,000, three counts of false pretense under $5,000, and two counts of uttering forged documents. She appeared in court the following day at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre.

Toronto police continue to investigate the full extent of the operation and are urging anyone with information or who may have been victimized to come forward.

This case underscores the importance of verifying the legitimacy of immigration service providers, especially in a city that attracts many newcomers seeking permanent residence and employment.
