A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years for murdering his brother in Hackney.
Peter John, 59, of Homerton Road, pleaded guilty to killing his 60-year-old brother, Miller John. The sentencing took place on Thursday, 18 December at Inner London Crown Court.
Police were alerted after Peter John attended Stoke Newington police station shortly after 10:00am on Monday, 3 March. While standing outside, he called 999 and admitted to the operator:
“I bludgeoned my brother last night in a fit of rage.”
Officers arrived promptly and confirmed the incident. Peter John explained that he had woken up that morning to find his brother dead and walked to the station immediately.
Emergency services attended the Homerton Road property, discovering Miller John’s body. He had suffered multiple puncture wounds and injuries inflicted with a garden fork and a walking stick.
Peter John was arrested on the same day and charged the following day. CCTV and other evidence were reviewed to reconstruct his movements, supporting the investigation and the case against him.
Detective Inspector John Marriott, who led the investigation, said:
“I hope today’s sentencing brings some comfort to the John family. Peter carried out a senseless attack against his brother in the home they shared. Throughout this difficult time, our officers have worked closely with the family to provide support, and our thoughts remain with them.”
The case highlights the tragic consequences of familial violence and the role of prompt police intervention in bringing offenders to justice.
