In a chilling example of online phishing and fraud, a man was arrested in Bhubaneswar for deceiving a woman into believing he was a police inspector and marrying her under false pretenses. Subash Chandra Kanhar, 55, posed as Manoj Kumar Mishra, a police officer, and trapped the woman through social media.
Kanhar first contacted the woman on Facebook, and after befriending her, presented himself as a police inspector stationed in Rourkela. Over time, Kanhar convinced the woman of his intentions, eventually marrying her and even renting a house to further solidify the illusion of a genuine relationship.
However, doubts began to arise when Kanhar repeatedly avoided taking the woman to his real home, despite her requests. The victim’s suspicions grew, prompting her to investigate. She traced the vehicle number Kanhar had been using, leading her to his true residence in Bhadrak, Odisha. There, she discovered his real identity, realizing that she had been duped.
The woman, now aware of the deceit, approached the police and filed a complaint. Acting on her information, the police arrested Kanhar. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Kanhar had been married twice before and had exploited other women for financial and personal gain.
Kanhar’s true occupation was as a worker at a fabrication unit, a far cry from the police inspector persona he had assumed to manipulate and deceive his victims. Authorities confirmed that his actions were premeditated, targeting vulnerable women for his own benefit.
