Victoria Police have arrested a man for using counterfeit cash totaling $10,000 to purchase Pokémon collector cards and electronics from residents on Facebook Marketplace. The arrest took place after a series of fraudulent transactions, with the suspect attempting to scam multiple sellers.
On March 19, 2025, VicPD responded to a call from a woman who had sold $1,500 worth of Pokémon cards to the man the previous day. The woman later realized that the money she received was fake, noticing that the bills had an odd texture, duplicate serial numbers, and removable holographic security features.
The suspect, later identified as Lovedeep Dhillon, returned to the same seller on March 20, trying to purchase $2,700 worth of Pokémon cards. However, this time the seller was prepared, having alerted the police. Authorities were able to arrest the man at the scene, and $10,200 in counterfeit bills was seized.
The investigation is ongoing, with police warning that there may be additional victims. VicPD is urging anyone who believes they’ve fallen victim to similar scams to contact them. Additionally, they advise the public on how to spot counterfeit currency to protect against future scams.
The arrested man had been using the name ‘Lovedeep Dhillon’ on Facebook Marketplace during his transactions. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether more incidents are linked to him.
