Musheerabad police have arrested 24-year-old Dukka Uma Shanker, a native of Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, for the brutal murder of 17-year-old Pavitra at Bapuji Nagar. The accused was produced before the Magistrate for judicial custody.
According to police, the Warasiguda police received a complaint from Jadaga Laxmi on December 8. A year ago, Uma Shanker, a distant relative, had proposed to marry Pavitra, and the family had agreed to a future date for the wedding.
On December 6, Pavitra and her parents traveled to Vijayawada to fulfill a religious vow and returned late on December 7. The next day, around 12:15 pm, Uma Shanker came to the house and began arguing with the family over their trip. During the quarrel, he stabbed Pavitra in the throat with a knife and fled, leaving her to die from heavy bleeding.
The police investigation relied on CCTV footage, which helped track the accused near Skandagiri Temple in Chilkalguda, where he was apprehended on Wednesday.
During interrogation, Uma Shanker confessed that he killed Pavitra because she had rejected him and admitted that he had brought the knife with the intention to murder.
The accused remains in judicial custody while the police continue further investigation into the case.
