Man Arrested 27 Years Later for Stealing in Sivakasi Theft Case

A 55-year-old man from Sivakasi has been arrested by the Madurai district police for his involvement in a theft that took place 27 years ago. The 1997 robbery, which involved the theft of Rs60, had remained unsolved until recently, when a special police team uncovered crucial evidence leading to the suspect’s arrest.

The investigation into long-pending cases was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner Soorakumar, who set up a special team to track down absconding suspects. Special Sub-Inspectors Santhanapandian and Panneerselvan led the team, focusing on old cases, including the Theppakulam Police Station robbery, where the accused, identified as Panneer Selvam, had stolen ₹60 from a victim.

The breakthrough in the case came when investigators traced Panneer Selvam to Sivakasi, where he had relocated years ago. He was living a quiet life with his family and had even married. In a clever move, the police team approached his family under the guise of population surveyors. After confirming the suspect’s identity, they arrested him 27 years after the crime.

Panneer Selvam is now facing legal proceedings for the theft that took place nearly three decades ago. The case serves as a reminder of the persistence of law enforcement in solving even the most long-forgotten crimes.
