Mallory Nehemiah Brown Pleads Guilty to Illegal Gun Possession

Former Bank Robber Faces Federal Charges After Train Incident

by Amelia Crawford

A Washington man, Mallory Nehemiah Brown, 43, from Auburn, Washington, pleaded guilty in federal court to charges of illegal gun possession after an incident aboard an Amtrak train in January 2024. Brown, a convicted bank robber, faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and three years of supervised release.

In 2004, Brown was convicted of bank robbery, which prohibited him from owning firearms and ammunition. The charges stemmed from a January 9, 2024, incident where Brown was removed from an Amtrak train in Libby, Montana, after passengers reported an indecent exposure incident. A subsequent search of Brown’s bags uncovered four firearms, including three without serial numbers.

According to U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich, Brown boarded the train in Seattle, heading for Washington, D.C. During the trip, he allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior, which prompted a complaint from passengers. Upon stopping in Libby, law enforcement found firearms, ammunition, a suppressor, night vision goggles, and tactical equipment in his bags. Brown initially denied ownership, but the bags were identified as his.

The train conductor and passengers reported that Brown had exposed himself and masturbated while looking at two young girls seated nearby. When questioned, Brown admitted to the behavior. He was later charged with felony and misdemeanor indecent exposure to a minor, though the felony charge was dropped in a plea deal.

In addition to his federal gun charges, Brown’s previous convictions for indecent exposure, including one in 2017, were part of his criminal history. Brown is currently in custody at the Missoula County Detention Center and is scheduled for sentencing on May 29, 2025.

The investigation was a joint effort by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, FBI, Libby Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Montana Probation and Parole.
