RABAT, Morocco — Mali authorities have arrested a self-proclaimed “witch doctor”, identified as marabout Mr. Sinayogo, for allegedly defrauding citizens of more than €33,500 by promising that his rituals would help the national team defeat Senegal and reach the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semifinals.
According to officials, Sinayogo convinced supporters that he had spiritual powers capable of influencing match outcomes. Using social media and word of mouth, he collected donations, claiming the funds would pay for special ceremonies to guarantee Mali’s success. In total, he raised roughly 22 million CFA francs.
The scheme unraveled after Mali lost 1–0 to Senegal in the quarter-finals, with the decisive goal scored by Iliman Ndiaye in the first half. Enraged fans stormed Sinayogo’s home before police intervened to protect him and place him in custody.
He now faces charges of fraud, deception, and exploiting public belief in superstition, and remains under investigation. Prosecutors are expected to pursue financial fraud and spreading false claims.
The case has ignited debate in Mali, where football passion and traditional beliefs often intersect. Many fans had hoped the Mali Eagles could win their first AFCON title, but the loss exposed how easily emotions and superstition can be manipulated.
The AFCON tournament continues in Morocco, with hosts Morocco facing Nigeria in a semifinal match at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
