Malawi Police Investigate Stolen Presidential Dogs

Former deputy chief of staff arrested in Lilongwe theft

LILONGWE, Malawi — Police in Malawi are investigating the disappearance of four German Shepherds from the presidential palace in Lilongwe during the country’s political transition in September.

Godfrey Arthur Jalale, who served as State House deputy chief of staff under former President Lazarus Chakwera, has been arrested in connection with the theft but denies any wrongdoing.

Authorities confirmed they obtained a search warrant for Chakwera’s residence after information suggested the stolen dogs might have been kept there, though reports that Chakwera had been arrested were denied.

The theft took place between September 19 and October 4, following Chakwera’s electoral defeat to President Peter Mutharika. The four dogs were valued at $2,300 (£1,700), according to state prosecutors.

Police say the investigation has intensified amid reports of property looting from Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe and Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, the country’s second-largest city. “The Malawi Police Service assures the public that the investigation is progressing smoothly,” officials stated.

Chakwera’s party, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has accused the current administration of “harassing and intimidating” the former president. MCP MPs boycotted parliament and camped outside Chakwera’s residence amid heightened police activity.

Chakwera, a pastor-turned-politician, accepted defeat quietly and has maintained a low profile since the election, with his first public appearance last week to announce a Commonwealth mediation role in Tanzania.

President Mutharika, 85, returned to power promising a “return to proven leadership” amid national challenges, including fuel and foreign currency shortages. Speculation about his health and ability to govern has circulated, especially in contrast to Chakwera’s active campaign style.
