A shocking murder case has emerged from Mahasamund district in Chhattisgarh, where a 27-year-old man, Loknath Patel, was arrested for allegedly killing his 21-year-old girlfriend after learning about her pregnancy.
The incident took place under the Basna police station limits. According to police, the accused had been in a relationship with the victim for nearly a year and had allegedly promised to marry her. When the woman, who was deaf and mute, became pregnant, she reportedly began urging him to fulfill his promise, leading to tension between them.
On the night of March 23, the victim went to meet Patel and communicated her pregnancy through gestures. During the meeting, he allegedly attacked her with a stone, repeatedly hitting her on the head and face, resulting in her death. He later dumped the body in an agricultural field about 150 metres from her home and fled.
The next morning, her family began searching for her when she failed to return. Her body was later found in a blood-soaked condition in a nearby field, with severe injuries indicating a violent assault. Police were informed immediately.
A team from Basna police station, along with a dog squad, reached the spot and began the investigation. A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder charges.
During the probe, suspicion fell on Loknath Patel based on inputs from the victim’s family. He was taken into custody and later confessed to the crime. Police said he committed the murder fearing social stigma if the pregnancy became public.
Station House Officer Sharad Dubey confirmed that the accused has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Authorities are continuing the investigation, including examining charges related to exploitation under the false promise of marriage.
