ATLANTA, Ga. – A 39-year-old Bulgarian man has been arrested for armed robbery after police say he attempted to steal $40,000 from a bank in Atlanta using a grenade threat.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, Lyubomir Petleshkov entered a bank on July 15 at approximately 1:50 p.m. armed with a grenade and demanded $40,000. He threatened to detonate the grenade if staff did not comply.

Although he was only able to steal $6,000, Petleshkov fled the scene on a scooter, wearing a dark brown jacket and a hat obscuring his face.

Ten days later, police located and arrested Petleshkov. He was initially held at the Atlanta Detention Center before being booked into the Fulton County Jail. He has been formally charged with robbery.

Authorities have not released further details about the grenade or whether it was active.
