by Amelia Crawford

SCRANTON, Pa. — A Hazleton man, Luis Caraballo, 29, has been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing a handgun from a parked truck in Scranton early Saturday morning.

According to police, officers responded to a report of a man going through vehicles on the 1000 block of Corbett Avenue around 4:21 a.m. A local resident reported seeing the man twice — once entering her vehicle and then returning after she had locked it.

The suspect was described as wearing red pants and a reflective jacket. The woman provided surveillance footage to officers.

During a search, police spotted a man matching the description quickly walking away from a vehicle with an open door on the 1400 block of West Locust Street. Officers later located the suspect — identified as Caraballo — crawling under a porch nearby.

The homeowner shared video footage showing Caraballo damaging a gate and walking onto his deck. Police recovered a chrome Taurus revolver, bolt cutters, and various other items near the porch. The revolver was reported stolen from a Dodge Ram parked in the 900 block of Corbett Avenue.

Caraballo initially claimed he was visiting his girlfriend and was confused about the arrest. However, a background check revealed he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Caraballo has been charged with:

Theft by unlawful taking

Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person

Theft from a motor vehicle

He is currently in custody awaiting further court proceedings.
