MINEOLA, N.Y. — Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that Anthony Calvo, a 34-year-old Long Beach man, has been indicted on attempted murder and assault charges for allegedly attacking a 60-year-old former coworker with an axe, inflicting life-threatening injuries.

Calvo was arraigned today before Judge Robert Bogle on charges brought by a grand jury, including Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony) and Assault in the First Degree (a B violent felony). The defendant was remanded, and his next court appearance is scheduled for June 2, 2025. If convicted, Calvo faces up to 25 years in prison.

DA Donnelly condemned the violent attack, stating, “A past workplace dispute allegedly led to this horrific, unprovoked assault that left the victim with catastrophic injuries. Miraculously, despite the severe trauma, the victim was able to drag himself to his home and call for help. This senseless violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma of Long Beach also commented on the arrest: “The arrest and indictment of this dangerous individual for attempted murder is a critical step in delivering justice for the victim and ensuring the safety of our community.”

Details of the Attack:
According to the indictment, on the morning of February 13, 2025, at approximately 5:50 a.m., the victim was walking home from his overnight shift as a taxi dispatcher at Beech Street Taxi.

As the victim walked down Arizona Avenue toward his home, Anthony Calvo allegedly approached from behind and attacked the victim with an axe, striking him multiple times in the face, head, and arm.

The defendant had previously been employed as a driver at Beech Street Taxi but stopped working there in 2022.

After the attack, the victim, severely injured, dragged himself to the rear yard of his home and banged on the door for help. A family member immediately called 911, and Long Beach Police responded to the scene. The victim was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries for his injuries. He remains in critical condition with a substantial risk of death due to the severity of his wounds.

Investigation and Arrest:
Surveillance video obtained during the investigation showed the defendant fleeing the scene on a white electronic bicycle and wearing dark clothing.

A search warrant executed at Calvo’s apartment on February 19, 2025 led to the discovery of the white electronic bicycle and a full-face mask, further linking him to the crime.

Calvo was arrested on March 12, 2025, by members of the Long Beach Police Department.

Case Prosecution:
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Ania Pulaski of the Homicide Bureau, under the supervision of Bureau Chief Jared Rosenblatt and Executive Assistant District Attorney Kevin Higgins. Calvo is represented by Steven Gaitman, Esq., and Jason Russo, Esq..

The charges are merely accusations, and Calvo is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
