Men accused of targeting 95-year-old in grandparent scam

by Sophia Bennett

CHATSWORTH, ON — The Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested and charged two Shelburne men in connection with a failed grandparent scam that targeted a 95-year-old woman in the Township of Chatsworth.

On June 24, 2025, the elderly victim received a call from a man pretending to be her grandson in legal trouble. A second caller, posing as a lawyer, attempted to pressure her into withdrawing funds for legal fees.

Fortunately, a vigilant family member recognized the scam and contacted police. No money was exchanged, and no personal financial information was shared.

Just two days later, on June 26, the same woman was contacted again—this time by someone claiming to be her son. The caller falsely claimed he had been in a serious accident and needed $58,000 for legal representation. The suspects informed her that someone would arrive in person to collect the funds.

Thanks to the family’s swift action, police were alerted again. When two individuals showed up at the victim’s residence, officers were waiting and promptly made arrests.

The suspects have been identified as:

Leroy Foster, 28, of Shelburne — Charged with Fraud Over $5,000 and Disguise with Intent

Aqeal Kisun-Johnson, 24, of Shelburne — Charged with Fraud Over $5,000

Both men were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound on August 7, 2025.

The OPP is reminding the public that scams targeting seniors are on the rise. Anyone who receives a suspicious call asking for money should verify the caller’s identity with a trusted family member and contact police immediately.
