Leonora Thomas Charged with Animal Cruelty in Vermont

Cat abandoned in crate off Route 9 in Marlboro

Marlboro, VT (WRGB) — A Northfield, New Hampshire woman is facing criminal charges after she allegedly abandoned a cat in Marlboro, Vermont, according to Vermont State Police.

Leonora Thomas, 58, was charged with animal cruelty following an incident in which she reportedly left a cat in a crate along Route 9, without any food or water. Concerned bystanders witnessed the act and promptly alerted authorities.

Troopers arrived at the scene to find the cat enclosed in a crate, exposed to the elements and lacking basic necessities. An investigation led to Thomas’s arrest.

Ownership of the cat has since been relinquished, and the animal was placed under the care of the Windham County Humane Society, where it is now receiving proper care.

Thomas has been issued a citation and is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court – Windham County Criminal Division on October 28, 2025.
