WESTPORT – A 52-year-old Norwalk man has been arrested for allegedly stealing checks from a Westport resident’s mailbox and attempting to cash them.
Lemont Linton was charged with third-degree identity theft and criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny after a local resident reported that two outgoing checks had gone missing from her mailbox on September 6.
Authorities say a bank in Norwalk later alerted the victim that a man had tried to cash the stolen checks using his driver’s license for identification. The ID identified the suspect as Linton.
Investigators used video surveillance and law enforcement resources to confirm his identity, leading to an arrest warrant. Linton was taken into custody on February 27. Unable to post a $25,000 bond, he was arraigned the following day at Stamford Superior Court.
