BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. — A 40-year-old woman has been arrested in Beaufort County for allegedly obtaining more than $20,000 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits through fraudulent means.
According to the South Carolina Department of Social Services, special agents arrested Lasonya Renee Morton on March 16. She has been charged with one count of fraudulent acquisition or use of food stamps exceeding $10,000.
Investigators allege that Morton improperly received a total of $23,598 in SNAP benefits by providing false information on her application.
An arrest warrant states that Morton failed to disclose that she was living with her husband and did not report his income, which would have affected her eligibility for assistance.
Authorities say the omission allowed her to receive benefits she was not entitled to under program guidelines. The case remains under investigation.
