VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A Georgia woman accused of scamming a Florida resident out of thousands has been extradited to Volusia County and now faces serious charges.

Lakesha Heard, 47, of Atlanta, was booked into the Volusia County Jail on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Authorities allege she played a key role in a scheme that defrauded a local resident of $9,300.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, the victim received a call from someone impersonating a sheriff’s lieutenant. The caller falsely claimed the victim had missed jury duty and faced arrest unless a payment was made.

The victim was instructed to deposit $9,300 into a Bitcoin ATM, which they did. Investigators later traced the funds to an account linked to Heard.

Detectives say Heard is part of a broader fraud ring tied to a Georgia state prison gang. “She is not the first to be arrested and probably won’t be the last,” the sheriff’s office noted in its release.

Heard now faces charges of grand theft and engaging in an organized scheme to defraud. She remains in custody on a $25,000 bond.
