SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) – A Springfield man is facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing an ambulance and striking a bicyclist on Tuesday afternoon.

Kurt J. Dumyahn, 38, was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft and aggravated battery, according to Springfield Police.

The incident began around noon when officers responded to a report at 11th and Carpenter about a bicyclist being hit by a stolen ambulance. Investigators say Dumyahn stole the vehicle from the ambulance bay at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.

In a surprising turn, Dumyahn reportedly returned the stolen ambulance to the hospital after the crash, where he was promptly arrested by law enforcement.

The bicyclist was transported to the hospital but refused medical treatment, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing.
