Kinston Man Arrested for Possessing Firearm as Felon

Erik Penaloza arrested after traffic stop on Jan. 22

On Wednesday, January 22, at approximately 6:18 p.m., the Kinston Police Department’s C-Squad initiated a traffic stop on the 600 block of W Vernon Avenue. During the stop, officers conducted a probable cause search, which led to the discovery of narcotics and a firearm inside the vehicle.

Erik Penaloza, 26, from Deep Run, was identified as the passenger in the vehicle. As a convicted felon, Penaloza was found in possession of the firearm, a violation of state law. He was arrested and charged with possessing a firearm as a felon.

Penaloza was subsequently taken to the Lenoir County Jail, where he was held on a secured bond. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
