North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Keysha Cox, a 50-year-old resident of Aberdeen, on August 15. Cox faces one count of insurance fraud and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felony charges.
Special agents from the NC Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division allege that Cox tried to defraud Travelers Personal Insurance Company out of $1,946 by filing a renter’s insurance claim for an address where she did not reside. The fraudulent act reportedly took place on April 30, 2023.
Cox was arrested on July 11 and later released on a $5,000 secured bond. She is scheduled to appear in Moore County District Court on August 26.
“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” said Commissioner Mike Causey. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
