Treasurer charged with unauthorized transactions

by Sophia Bennett

LAPORTE COUNTY, IN — Kerry M. Surowiec, 46, of La Porte, was arrested for theft in connection with her role as treasurer for the Kingsbury Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

The Kingsbury PTO is an independent nonprofit organization. According to the LaPorte Community School Corporation, the PTO manages its own finances, bylaws, and leadership. The school district does not have access to PTO funds, financial records, or bank statements.

Concerns about a PTO account were reported to a school resource officer, who launched an investigation. Police discovered unauthorized transactions and identified Surowiec as a suspect.

The LaPorte County prosecutor’s office received the report on January 26, found probable cause, and formally charged Surowiec with one count of theft. An arrest warrant was issued on February 4, 2026.

Surowiec voluntarily surrendered to authorities on February 6 at the LaPorte County Jail and was released after posting a $755 cash bond.
