BATON ROUGE, La. — Kerington Jermani Briscoe, 29, has been charged with theft over $25,000, bank fraud, and illegal transmission of monetary funds in connection with a scheme that defrauded Neighbors Federal Credit Union of $158,444, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office Financial Crimes Division investigated the scheme, which began on May 5, 2025. Victims reported receiving text messages that appeared to come from the credit union asking about recent transactions. When members replied that they had not made the transactions, follow-up calls were made by someone claiming to be with the credit union’s fraud department, according to the affidavit. The callers allegedly obtained victims’ online banking login credentials.

Victims were told their accounts would be frozen for 48 hours while the alleged fraud was investigated. When checking their balances later, members discovered substantial sums missing.

Investigators say Briscoe opened two accounts with Neighbors FCU on May 2, depositing $15 and $5. The next day, the accounts received multiple fraudulent deposits of $10,000 each from victim accounts. Video surveillance shows Briscoe withdrawing cash at L’Auberge Casino on May 3, with one withdrawal totaling $9,788.95. Additional funds were allegedly transferred to co-defendants’ accounts.

The scheme involved five victimized members and multiple co-defendants. Surveillance footage reportedly shows Briscoe at both the credit union and casino with co-defendants during withdrawals. Neighbors FCU recorded a loss of $106,700 linked directly to Briscoe’s accounts.

Attempts to contact Briscoe at his listed phone number prior to the arrest were unsuccessful, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing.
