Kannur, Kerala: Forest officials in Kerala have arrested seven individuals involved in wildlife trafficking after seizing tiger skin, claws, and teeth in a major crackdown. The operation, conducted in Kannur district, followed confidential intelligence about an attempted sale of these animal parts.

Acting on a tip-off late Friday night, officials launched a coordinated operation in Kathiroor, Thalassery taluk. The first arrests included Ashwin from Eruvatti, along with Sandheesh and Balan from Cheruvanchery, who were caught trying to sell the tiger products.

Subsequent inquiries led to the detention of four more suspects: Sharath KK of Kallikandy, Rajeesh of Mangad, Vithul from Cheruvanchery, and Rakhil from Malal. Authorities also confiscated an Innova car, allegedly used to transport tiger parts, and a scooter involved in the operation.

Veterinary specialists confirmed that the seized items belonged to a tiger, and the components have been sent for DNA testing to support the ongoing investigation.

The operation was led by Forest Range Officer Nithinraj of Kottiyoor, along with the Kannur Forest Vigilance Unit, involving multiple forest personnel to tackle wildlife crime collaboratively.

The seven suspects were presented before the Thalassery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody. Forest officials plan to seek custody for further interrogation.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the gang may have connections with poachers in Karnataka, though it remains unclear if they directly sourced the tiger skin. Authorities continue to gather evidence on the trafficking network to prevent further illegal wildlife trade.
