SHELDON — Kelly Ann Banghart, 62, of Melvin, was arrested Thursday, June 19, in Sheldon on charges of third-degree and fifth-degree theft following multiple incidents at a local Hy-Vee store.
According to the Sheldon Police Department, Banghart was caught by an officer waiting outside the store after she attempted to leave with two unpaid items valued at approximately $6.
The theft investigation revealed that Banghart had been “skip scanning” items at the self-checkout lane at Hy-Vee on multiple occasions from February through June 16. The total estimated value of the unscanned items is about $1,100.
Banghart admitted to not scanning some items during checkout, according to the incident report.
Under Iowa law, third-degree theft applies when the value of stolen property ranges from $751 to $1,500, while fifth-degree theft covers property valued under $300.
Banghart faces charges corresponding to both theft levels as the case proceeds.
