EAU CLAIRE COUNTY, WI (WQOW) – Kayla Szydel, 39, a former certified peer support specialist at The Wellness Shack, is facing criminal charges after allegedly stealing from the nonprofit mental health recovery center.

Szydel has been charged with theft from a business setting and fraud against a financial institution, according to a criminal complaint.

The Wellness Shack, a peer-run center supporting individuals with severe or persistent mental health disorders, reported financial discrepancies tied to Szydel’s time of employment. The complaint states that Szydel wrote 31 unauthorized checks, some of which were made out to herself and included forged signatures.

In total, the organization estimates a loss of $9,569.48 over a two-month period. Additionally, a local credit union reportedly suffered a loss of $2,353.59 related to her actions.

Szydel no longer works for the organization. She is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for an initial appearance.
