TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A 22-year-old man has been booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections in connection with a 2022 homicide in Topeka.
Kayden Smith, of Topeka, was arrested on Monday, June 2, by the Topeka Police Department with assistance from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities located him in the 6200 block of SE Stanley Rd.
Smith now faces a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Dustin Clayton. The incident occurred on Friday, April 22, 2022, in the 500 block of SW Lane.
Initially, Smith had been arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder shortly after the shooting. His formal booking on the second-degree charge marks a significant development in the ongoing case.
Officials have not released further details regarding what led to the updated charge.
