Coimbatore: Police have arrested Kathiresan (31) of Malumichampatti and Raj Kamal (32) of Masakkalipalayam in connection with a fatal road accident that claimed the life of their 32-year-old friend in Coimbatore. The two accused were remanded to judicial custody on Friday.
According to the police, the deceased was identified as J Anthony Paul Richard, a resident of Guruvayur Nagar. Investigations revealed that the trio had consumed liquor at Raj Kamal’s house on Wednesday night. In the early hours of Thursday, they decided to step out for tea and travelled in a car, with Kathiresan driving.
While speeding along Avinashi Road, the car allegedly rammed into another vehicle. Anthony died on the spot due to the impact, while Kathiresan and Raj Kamal sustained injuries.
Police booked the accused under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for driving under the influence. They were produced before a judicial magistrate and sent to Coimbatore Central Prison.
Anthony is survived by his wife and a 10-month-old child. Police said further investigation into the accident is ongoing.
