Bilikere police have arrested four youths—Karthik of Hunsur, Kiran, Charan, and Manukumar—on charges of animal cruelty following a complaint from Kavya, a law practitioner and member of the Animal Defence Council, Bengaluru.
According to police, the accused were booked under sections of mischief, rendering an animal useless under the BNS, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.
The case came to light after Kavya came across disturbing footage showing the youths assaulting and abusing a dog on social media platforms, including WhatsApp. Investigating further with Priyadarshini of the Animal Defence Council in Mysuru, they traced the accused and arranged a meeting under the pretext of buying puppies.
Acting on the tip-off, Bilikere police detained the four at a Cafe Coffee Day near Bilikere. The case will now be transferred to the Hunsur police for further investigation.
Police emphasized that such acts of cruelty towards animals are taken very seriously, and strict legal action will be pursued.
