Karimnagar police arrested 23-year-old Dakshinamurthy, a hospital technician, for allegedly sexually assaulting a patient after administering sedatives at a private hospital. The arrest followed a complaint filed by the survivor’s family, and a case under Section 4(2)(e) BNS, 2023 has been registered. Investigations are ongoing.
The survivor, a young woman from Jagtial, had been admitted to the hospital on September 6 for typhoid treatment. Around 2–3 a.m. on September 7, Dakshinamurthy, on duty as an operation theatre technician, administered a sedative injection that caused her to lose consciousness. After the assault, he allegedly informed her relatives that she had complications. The patient realized what had happened upon regaining consciousness and reported the incident immediately.
Originally from Laxmidevipet in Sironcha, Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, Dakshinamurthy moved to Karimnagar four years ago. Police investigations revealed a history of misconduct, including coming to work intoxicated and being removed from a previous hospital. He also reportedly consumed alcohol, watched pornography at the hospital, and attempted to avoid CCTV detection by closing curtains around the patient’s bed.
Police commissioner Gaush Alam confirmed that preliminary inquiry and CCTV footage substantiate the assault. Authorities are also reviewing hospital protocols and security measures, with a district coordination meeting planned to strengthen patient safety.
Youth organizations protested outside the hospital, demanding accountability. Commissioner Alam emphasized that while the survivor in this case is an adult, Karimnagar has seen over 30 cases this year related to child pornography, and hospitals must ensure stringent safety measures.
