The Karimganj police have arrested Hemant Kumar Gogoi, the managing director of Singhaniya Group, in connection with a large-scale financial fraud scheme. Gogoi, who also owns the Pragjyotish Group, was apprehended on Monday in Paltanbazar, Guwahati.
He is accused of masterminding a fraudulent operation involving multiple money marketing companies that deceived thousands by promising loans under false pretenses. According to Additional SP Pratap Das, the fraudulent company collected Rs2,000 from approximately 2,000 individuals, with promises of loans amounting to Rs25,000.
“Following a raid, we located and arrested Gogoi in Guwahati. He has five pending cases in Meghalaya, which compounds the seriousness of the charges against him,” Das stated. A case has been registered against Gogoi under sections 120(B), 420, 406, 409, and sections 21(1), 21(2), and 21(3) of the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act.
Further investigations revealed that several cases against the Pragjyotish Group are also pending in Cachar and Hailakandi districts. The arrest follows a recent police raid on Singhaniya Fintech Acquisition Company, located on Silchar Road in Karimganj. During this operation, police seized several incriminating documents and arrested Rahul Roy, the district coordinator for the group, along with another individual managing the office.
The Singhaniya Group’s network extends throughout Assam, and ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full scale of the financial scam. The police continue to work diligently to expose the breadth of these fraudulent activities and provide justice to the affected victims.
