TEANECK, N.J. — A Bergen County nonprofit volunteer was arrested on May 30 after an investigation revealed she allegedly stole thousands of dollars by forging checks and impersonating a fellow organization member.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said that in February, the Teaneck Police Department alerted the Prosecutor’s Financial Crimes Unit about possible theft at an unnamed nonprofit in Bergen County.

Authorities later identified the suspect as Karen A. McEvoy, 57, of Teaneck. McEvoy allegedly wrote unauthorized checks from the nonprofit’s bank account and deposited the funds into her personal account.

Investigators found that McEvoy assumed the identity of another organization member and forged signatures to authorize fraudulent transactions.

The total amount McEvoy allegedly obtained through this scheme is approximately $36,000.

She was charged with:

Third-degree theft by deception

Third-degree forgery

Third-degree impersonation

McEvoy was released pending her first court appearance at Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
