The Kano State Anti-Corruption and Public Complaints Commission has initiated an investigation into a suspected ₦1.5 billion fraud related to a foreign scholarship program. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the state government sponsored 1,001 postgraduate students to pursue master’s degrees in India and Uganda.
This scholarship initiative, part of a scheme inaugurated by Governor Yusuf, saw a farewell dinner hosted for the first batch of 550 beneficiaries at the Government House, where he praised former Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso for establishing the program.
However, reports indicate that only 418 students were actually sent abroad for their studies, raising serious concerns about the fate of the remaining students.
Kabiru A. Kabiru, the Public Relations Officer of the commission, confirmed that two senior officials are being interrogated in connection with the alleged fraud.
The ongoing investigation aims to identify and hold accountable those responsible for any misconduct. Preliminary findings have already revealed fraudulent activities within the Ministry of Higher Education concerning the postgraduate students’ placements in India and Uganda.
