by Sophia Bennett

A woman has been arrested in Elmore County for allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband to an inmate at Elmore Correctional Facility.

Kamala Nishea Lewis was charged Sunday with promoting prison contraband first-degree after officers intercepted her trying to pass items to 44-year-old inmate Johnathan Thomas during visitation hours, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC).

Lewis was booked into the Elmore County Jail. Authorities said Thomas is expected to face the same charges.

ADOC officials noted that Thomas is serving a 30-year sentence for a robbery in Marshal County. The department added that the incident remains under investigation.
