Belsor Police have arrested Kalpajyoti Deka, the prime accused in the Mohkhuli robbery-murder case in Assam’s Nalbari district, ending a nearly three-month-long manhunt.
Deka, a resident of Mohkhuli, had allegedly masterminded the brutal crime and remained in hiding since the night of the incident on August 29.
Police teams, working across districts and following multiple leads, tracked him down after months of sustained investigation involving CID officers, fingerprint experts, a dog squad, and human intelligence.
The victim’s son expressed relief after the arrest, saying, “Now that the main culprit is behind bars and all others are in custody, my father’s soul can rest in peace.”
Earlier, in September, police had arrested four individuals linked to the case:
Bhaskarjyoti Deka
Mrinmoy Bezbaruah
Rupam Bezbaruah (who later surrendered)
Puja Rajbongshi
All four were found directly involved in the robbery and murder. Additionally, a young woman from Zoo Road, Guwahati, was detained after police traced the victim’s wife Meera Barman’s stolen mobile phone to her.
The horrific crime occurred when three masked dacoits broke into the home of retired government employee Promod Barman. The gang tied up Barman and his wife, looted valuables for nearly 30 minutes, and then murdered him in front of her before escaping.
With Kalpajyoti Deka now in custody, all accused in the high-profile case have been apprehended, marking a major breakthrough in the investigation.
