SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Four men, including Kalil Davis of Hesperia, have been convicted in connection with a staged crash on the I-215 freeway designed to defraud a rideshare driver’s insurance, officials confirmed. A fifth suspect from Adelanto remains charged with additional crimes including pimping, pandering, and false imprisonment.
The California Department of Insurance announced the results of a months-long investigation on November 21, 2025.
According to investigators, the scheme involved ordering a rideshare and using a second vehicle to deliberately crash into it. The suspects then planned to file fraudulent injury claims to collect insurance payouts.
Kalil Davis, 27, pleaded no contest to insurance fraud and assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to 180 days in county jail and two years of felony probation.
Deshawn Perater-Nickson, 26, the registered owner of the crash vehicle from Adelanto, was arrested earlier this year. While in custody, additional evidence linked him to false imprisonment, pimping, and pandering. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 26, 2026.
The crash, which occurred on November 23, 2024, was initially reported as a hit-and-run. However, the rideshare driver suspected foul play, prompting the involvement of the Inland Empire Automobile Insurance Fraud Task Force (IEAIFTF).
Investigators identified five individuals in the plot: Davis, Perater-Nickson, Ledontae Pope, 30, and John Murillo, 37, both from San Bernardino, and Klydale Moses, 24, from Fontana. Murillo was driving the vehicle that collided with the rideshare, while Moses helped plan and execute the scheme.
Charges against Pope, Davis, and Perater-Nickson were filed on January 27, 2025. Subsequent arrests of Murillo and Moses were made on May 19 after further investigation. At the time of arrest, two of the suspects were on probation for prior convictions involving narcotics trafficking, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony firearm possession.
Between late September and October 2025, four suspects entered no-contest pleas:
Ledontae Pope, 30 – 90 days county jail, two years felony probation.
Kalil Davis, 27 – 180 days county jail, two years felony probation.
John Murillo, 37 – Two-year state prison term, sentencing pending.
Klydale Moses, 24 – 90 days county jail, two years felony probation.
Perater-Nickson’s case remains ongoing, and he could face additional prison time if convicted.
“The Department of Insurance urges Californians to document and report suspicious crashes as part of its ongoing anti-fraud efforts,” the agency stated.
The IEAIFTF includes members from the California Department of Insurance, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol.
