Kaitlyn Braun, a Brantford, Ontario woman previously sentenced to house arrest for deceiving doulas, now faces additional charges in connection with a new victim. On May 6, 2024, Hamilton Police confirmed that Braun was charged with three new offenses: obtaining by false pretence, false information, and fraud under $5,000. These charges stem from alleged incidents that occurred between April 28 and April 30, 2024.
Braun was arrested on April 30 and charged the following day for obtaining by false pretence, harassing communications, and breaching her conditional sentence order. The charges are related to Braun allegedly seeking false support for pregnancy and childbirth from another victim between April 17 and 18, 2024.
Since her April 30 arrest, Braun has remained in custody. This follows her previous guilty plea in December 2023, where she admitted to deceiving doulas. Between June 2022 and her arrest, Braun contacted multiple doulas, fabricating a story that she was pregnant as a result of sexual assault. She also pretended to experience a stillbirth, gaining sympathy and support from the doulas. Braun was sentenced to two years of house arrest in February 2024. However, concerns were raised at the time about her potential to reoffend, as noted in a mental health report.
Amy Silva, one of Braun’s original victims, has spoken out about the ongoing risks and warned others. She emphasized that many people are still unaware of Braun’s fraudulent actions and suggested more victims might come forward as the case gains more attention. Silva encourages anyone who believes they may have been contacted by Braun to reach out for support from a trusted person, whether a doula or the police.
“We just don’t want it to happen to anybody else,” Silva said. Those who have come forward share the goal of preventing Braun from harming others through her deceptive practices.
