PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WJAR) – A husband and wife were both arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in separate incidents on the same night, within just two hours of each other, Portsmouth police reported.
The first arrest occurred at 12:52 a.m. on Sept. 20, when 36-year-old Kaila McGreal was pulled over on West Main Road near Melville School for multiple traffic violations. Officers noted signs of alcohol intoxication and arrested her on suspicion of DUI.
McGreal was transported to the Portsmouth Police Station, where her husband, 46-year-old Matthew Wheeler, arrived shortly afterward to pick her up. Officers said Wheeler also appeared to be intoxicated.
When officers attempted to arrest Wheeler, he allegedly resisted, leading to additional charges.
McGreal faces a DUI charge, while Wheeler is charged with DUI, resisting arrest, and refusing to submit to a chemical test.
Police did not disclose blood alcohol levels or whether the couple was released on bail. The case is currently under investigation.
