Police in Srirangam have arrested K. Shankar, a security personnel at the Srirangam Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, after he allegedly stole foreign currency during the periodic counting of offerings deposited by devotees into the temple hundials.
The theft came to light during the morning cash-counting session on Wednesday, conducted by a group of temple staff. Following a complaint from the temple superintendent, R. Venkatesan, the Srirangam Crime Police registered a case against Shankar.
Authorities are investigating the exact amount stolen and whether other staff members were involved in the crime.
