HILO, Hawaii (Island News) — Justin Yamauchi, 30, of Mountain View, was arrested on July 15 for allegedly stealing a Subaru Outback last month in Hilo.

The theft was reported on June 29 after the vehicle was taken from a home on Kinoole Street. Police officers later found Yamauchi driving the stolen Subaru at the Kurtistown 7-Eleven, where he was apprehended.

In addition to the vehicle theft charges, Yamauchi was arrested on two unrelated outstanding warrants for resisting police orders to stop, stemming from incidents in Puna on July 7 and 14.

According to police, Yamauchi faces charges including first-degree theft of a motor vehicle, first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, habitual property crime, driving without a license, and two counts of second-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.

Yamauchi appeared in Hilo District Court on July 16, where his bail was set at $135,000. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 18, 2025.

If convicted of first-degree theft—a Class B felony—Yamauchi could face up to 10 years in prison or probation with up to 18 months in jail.
