The Delhi Police have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing a 60-year-old man with a meat cleaver in central Delhi, officials said on Wednesday. The attack was reportedly triggered by a long-standing property dispute.
The accused, identified as Jugnu alias Jiyauddin (42), a resident of Rakabganj, was apprehended late on December 20 after police analysed CCTV footage and technical surveillance data, officials said.
The incident occurred at around 5.45 pm near Badi Masjid in Rakabganj, when the victim was returning home after offering prayers at a mosque. Police said the accused suddenly attacked the man, inflicting a serious injury near his chest.
The victim’s son, who witnessed the assault, immediately rushed his father to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital. Police said the injured man was unconscious and remains unfit to record a statement.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan said a case has been registered under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, which deals with attempt to murder, based on a complaint filed by the victim’s son.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused harboured a grudge against the victim’s family following a court order issued around 18 months ago, which had forced Jiyauddin’s family to vacate their previous residence.
To trace the suspect, police teams examined footage from over 50 CCTV cameras in and around the area. Using video analysis and local intelligence inputs, the accused was finally tracked and arrested near Delhi Gate at around 11 pm on the same day, the DCP said.
Further investigation is underway.
