Joseph Young, 51, was convicted last week in Louisville on one count of arson and three counts of wanton endangerment. Young intentionally set fire to an occupied dwelling, aiming to damage or destroy the building. Three people were inside during the incident, which was recorded on surveillance video.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers emphasized the severity of Young’s actions, noting the jury recommended a total of 52 years in prison with enhanced penalties. “Things very well could have spiraled into greater tragedy,” she said, expressing relief that Young will no longer pose a threat.

Under sentencing law, Young faces 22 years for arson and 30 years for wanton endangerment charges combined, to be served consecutively. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 8.
