BOONE COUNTY, WV — A Boone County man is in custody following the theft of a four-wheeler from a Coal River Road property.

In the early hours of June 13 around 2 a.m., Joseph “Joey” Workman and Matthew Hawkins were captured on surveillance footage trespassing on private property before pushing a green Honda Rancher 350 ATV off the lot. The ATV, valued at approximately $1,340, was seen being moved out of camera view. The suspects also damaged one security camera to avoid identification, but other footage clearly showed their involvement, according to Trooper R.K. Bower of the West Virginia State Police.

On June 15, police recovered the stolen ATV in a yard on Toney’s Branch Road. The person in possession claimed to have purchased it for $350 earlier that evening and provided a Bill of Sale signed by Workman.

Later that night, officers located Workman hiding inside a home on Edens Lane in Comfort. After being taken into custody, he was transported to the West Virginia State Police Madison Detachment and later held at Southwestern Regional Jail awaiting arraignment on theft charges.

Authorities have not yet announced whether charges will be filed against Matthew Hawkins, who also appeared in the surveillance footage. The investigation is ongoing.
