ST. ALBANS, Vt. — Police arrested two men following a high-speed chase and car crash during an attempted escape from law enforcement in St. Albans.

On Sunday, officers responded to reports of suspected drug activity and stopped a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Jose Coiscou-Mercedes of Staten Island, with 21-year-old Brandy Perez of Springfield, Massachusetts, as a passenger.

A narcotic K9 was on the scene to assist with a search when the suspects suddenly fled, driving recklessly. The driver lost control and crashed the car on Swanton Road near Franklin Park West. Both men then fled on foot into nearby woods.

Authorities later located Coiscou-Mercedes and Perez, recovering a loaded firearm that had been discarded during the pursuit.

Both suspects remain held at Northwest State Correctional Facility without bail and are scheduled to appear in Franklin County Superior Court on Monday.

Charges against them include resisting arrest, eluding an officer, and possession of cocaine.
