DECORAH, Iowa (WXOW) — A 29-year-old man from Decorah is facing multiple felony charges after firing a shotgun during a tense standoff with police, which ended when a K9 unit disarmed him.
On Monday, July 14 at 1:58 p.m., Winneshiek County deputies responded to a welfare check at a home on Ranch Road. Deputies were initially informed that Jordan Schaller was not present. However, he soon appeared outside the residence visibly armed with a 20-gauge shotgun.
Schaller approached a deputy while ignoring multiple commands to drop the weapon. Instead, he fired several rounds into the ground, escalating the situation.
Additional officers quickly arrived, and K9 unit “Drago” was deployed. In a dramatic intervention, Drago bit the shotgun from Schaller’s hands and returned the loaded weapon to law enforcement.
Schaller was then arrested without further resistance.
He is currently being held at the Winneshiek County Jail on a $21,500 cash bond. Charges against him include:
Felony Assault on a Peace Officer
Use or Display of a Firearm
Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon (Class D Felony)
Assault While Participating in a Felony (Class D Felony)
2nd Degree Harassment (Serious Misdemeanor)
Search warrants have been executed, and the case remains under active investigation.
