LUMBERTON, NC — Jonathan Hammonds, 49, was jailed on a $50,000 secured bond after being arrested for allegedly stealing copper wire from his employer, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
On June 4, investigators were alerted to a larceny involving more than 2,000 pounds of copper wire stolen by an employee. While the business name was not disclosed, police traced the stolen wire to a recycling center in Lumberton.
Using GPS data, video surveillance, and business receipts, detectives identified Hammonds as responsible. Further investigation revealed he had also sold an additional 1,400 pounds of stolen copper wire. Hammonds allegedly stole copper wire on four separate occasions over five months, accumulating approximately $10,000 from the sales.
A warrant was issued on June 5 charging Hammonds with four counts of felony larceny by employee and felony possession of stolen property. Although initially not located in Moore County, Hammonds was eventually arrested by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
